Matt Boyle, the national political editor at Breitbart News, said the Trump administration foreign policy is being executed “by design” and is free from “accidents.”
“It’s abundantly clear at this point that there’s no accidents being made in American foreign policy at this point, whether it be the steps to reach peace in Ukraine or Gaza, or whether it be efforts to normalize economic relations with the Russians or efforts to counter the Chinese plan for global hegemony,” Boyle explained on Thursday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
Boyle’s assessment of the Trump administration’s foreign policy approach comes days after he sat down for an exclusive interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who discussed a wide range of issues including the administration’s efforts to offensively counter the Chinese Communist Party’s Belt and Road Initiative.
“This interview with the secretary seemed to confirm that there are no accidents happening right now. This is by design. The Trump administration has thought through exactly what they want to do to counter the Chinese Communist Party,” Boyle said.
Boyle said Rubio stressed that the U.S., under Trump, is working to turn its attention to countering China on offense as opposed to the “obsession” with Russia as seen under the previous administration.
“Secretary Rubio told me…it’s time to knock off the nonsense of our foreign policy establishment’s obsession with Russia. It doesn’t mean the Russians are great guys, but the fact is that the Chinese are the real threat here and the Trump administration seems to deeply understand that and are taking significant steps in the right direction to counter the CCP on offense, really for the first time that we’ve seen in the modern era. We’ve been playing defense against China for a long time, but now the United States is playing offense with Trump back in the White House,” Boyle added.
One example Boyle said Rubio gave when it comes to countering China on offensive is actively attempting to peel Russia off from being dependent on China.
“Rubio said that while the U.S. will probably never be successful in fully peeling Russia off of China, it makes sense for the Russians to not want to be a junior partner to the Chinese Communist Party in the grand global scheme of things. So he basically said, yeah, like that’s the mission here is that the goal is to separate the two of them,” Boyle said.
“One would think that the Russians do want to be independent of China. They don’t want to be a vassal state or a tributary of Beijing. They want to be their own thing and to do that, it makes sense for the U.S. to open talks with the Russians. The Chinese are definitely perturbed by this. The Russians are very open to working with the United States,” Boyle added.
In all, Boyle said his interview with Rubio captured the overall sense that the U.S. is actively witnessing the “rewriting of the trajectory of global history” in just a matter of weeks under the Trump administration.
“I think that we could be seeing the rewriting of the trajectory of global history here in front of our eyes, just weeks into Donald Trump’s presidency in the White House. I think that’s what this Rubio interview captured,” Boyle said.
